How to Handle Discouragement as an Independent Artist

There are days when it feels like no one’s listening. Streams are flat, social media is quiet, and the song you put your heart into didn’t move the needle. That’s part of the game. But it doesn’t mean you’re losing.

Discouragement is normal—it’s a side effect of caring. You just can’t let it define your next move.

When I’m stuck in that space, I remind myself why I started. I revisit old wins. I listen to something I’ve made that still hits. I reach out to a collaborator I trust. Sometimes I just take a walk and unplug from the metrics.

The key is to zoom out. No single post, release, or week of data defines your career. You’re building a catalog, a brand, a life in music—and that takes time.

If you’re in a low point, don't rush to produce your way out of it. Rest. Reconnect with the part of you that loves making music even if no one’s watching. That’s where the next breakthrough usually lives.
